Happens to the best of us: Something breaks. You apply a quick fix and the issue is resolved. Oh, wait, it was not resolved there is reboot needed. But this is on a server and rebooting it means client downtime and lost productivity. What is an IT Pro to do?
Well… modify the registry of course! If there is a pending reboot need all you have to do is :
Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager\PendingFileRenameOperations
- Back up the registry key
- Delete the registry key
- Install the software without restarting the computer first
- Restore the registry key from the backup location (if you want to – not really needed: just reboot the machine during your next patching cycle)
I was trying to install some software on a client PC and kept getting this message: “Windows has blocked this software because it can’t verify the publisher”
As it turns out this is an ActiveX restriction. Here is how I fixed it.
Navigate to Tools-> Internet options -> Security (tab) -> Custom level
Under the Active X section:
Enable: Run ActiveX and plug-ins
Enable: Download Signed ActiveX Controls
Enable: Script ActiveX controls marked as safe for scripting
Prompt: Download unsigned ActiveX Control
Prompt: Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe
Do be cautious: make sure that what you want to download is not malware. The steps above do significantly lower your security settings but it just means you have to be a bit more cautious when downloading 🙂
My last post was on Microsoft Virtual Academy.
Here is a really nice supplement to it: peer support and study groups
Microsoft learning has setup a really nice website: http://borntolearn.mslearn.net/certification/default.aspx
There are online discussion forums, event blogs and even exam vouchers (discounted)
If you are feeling alone as you “hit the books”, take a moment to connect with others going through the same materials. Best way to learn is from others experiences 🙂
I cant afford to pay for that! Why is IT training so expensive!?
We’ve all heard it many times – I have even said it myself. Too bad there is not a free option. Some place to go and watch videos and read about a topic…
Oh, wait, there is!! The Microsoft Virtual Academy (http://www.microsoftvirtualacademy.com) has a ton of videos, documents, guides and everything you could need to learn a topic
For those of us who are “just” IT Pros 🙂 there is a wealth of knowledge here
